Video sales letter: template, examples and maker
A video sales letter (VSL) does the job of a sales page in a short video: it names the problem, presents your product as the answer and asks for one action. Below: the seven-part structure, two scripts you can copy, and an animated VSL made from one of them. Paste your script into Easyimate and get the video, with voiceover, music and captions, without filming.

An animated VSL for a made-up online course, made from template 2 below, unedited.
The VSL structure: seven parts
| Part | What it does | Example line |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Hook | Calls out exactly who this is for, in the first sentence. | “If you're a freelancer working more hours but earning the same…” |
| 2. Problem | The pain in the viewer's own words. | “Asking for more feels risky.” |
| 3. Why it keeps happening | The cause they haven't fixed yet. | “Most people set their rates once and never touch them.” |
| 4. Solution | Your product, introduced as the answer to that cause. | “Pathway shows you how to price by value.” |
| 5. How it works | Concrete steps that make it believable. | “One lesson and one task a week, with templates.” |
| 6. Offer | Everything they get, the price or trial, and any real deadline. | “The full course, every template, a private community.” |
| 7. Call to action | One action, said and shown. | “Join the waitlist at pathway.example.” |
Add proof (real results, reviews, numbers you can document) wherever you have it, usually after “How it works”. Never invent it.
Template 1: SaaS free trial (60 seconds, ~150 words)
For a landing page that asks visitors to start a trial. Fernly is a made-up app.
| Time | Narration | On screen |
|---|---|---|
| 0–6 s | If you've ever bought a beautiful houseplant and watched it slowly give up, this is for you. | A lush plant on a shelf wilting over a few days. |
| 6–16 s | Most plants don't die from neglect. They die from the wrong amount of water, at the wrong time, in the wrong light. | Three icons: a watering can, a clock, a sun; each with a small cross. |
| 16–30 s | Fernly learns each of your plants from one photo, then tells you exactly when to water, how much, and where it will be happiest. | A phone photographing a plant; a care card appearing with water, amount and light. |
| 30–45 s | You get one gentle reminder on the right day, and a quick check-in photo each month to catch problems early. | A notification “Water the fern: 200 ml”; a calendar with monthly check-ins. |
| 45–60 s | Try Fernly free for 14 days. No card needed. Start at fernly.example. | The logo, “14 days free · no card” and the web address. |
Template 2: online course (75 seconds, ~180 words)
The script behind the example video at the top of this page. Pathway is a made-up course.
| Part | Narration | On screen |
|---|---|---|
| Hook | If you're a freelancer working more hours every month but earning the same, this short video is for you. | Kinetic type: “more hours”, “same income”; a clock and a flat line chart. |
| Problem | Most freelancers set their rates once, then never touch them, because asking for more feels risky. | A price tag frozen in ice; a worried face. |
| Solution | Pathway is a six-week course that shows you how to price by value, write proposals clients say yes to, and raise rates without losing your best clients. | Three cards: Price by value · Proposals that win · Raise rates safely. |
| How it works | Each week is one short lesson and one task you finish in under an hour, with templates you can use the same day. | A six-step timeline; a checklist being ticked; a template. |
| Offer | You get the full course, every template, and a private community to practise your pitch. | An offer stack building up: course, templates, community. |
| Deadline | Enrolment opens on the first of each month and is limited to two hundred people. | A calendar with the first circled; a seat counter. |
| Call to action | Ready to charge what you're worth? Join the waitlist at pathway.example. | The logo, the web address and a “Join the waitlist” button. |
VSL tips that keep trust
One viewer, one problem
Write to a single person with a single problem. A VSL that tries to sell to everyone persuades no one.
Only real proof
Use results, reviews and numbers you can document. Invented testimonials or income claims can break advertising rules, and viewers can tell.
Real deadlines only
Limited seats or a closing date work only if they are true. Fake countdowns cost you the next sale.
Show the steps
“How it works” is where doubt goes away. Make it concrete enough to picture.
Captions on
Many people start the video muted. Big on-screen words carry the message without sound.
One action
End with a single web address or button. Put the same button right under the video.
Questions
What is a video sales letter?
A video sales letter (VSL) is a persuasive video that does the job of a written sales page: it names the viewer's problem, presents the product as the answer, shows how it works, makes an offer and asks for one action. It usually sits at the top of a landing page.
How long should a VSL be?
Long enough to make the case and no longer. For a low-priced product or a free trial, 60 to 90 seconds is often enough. Higher-priced offers can run several minutes, usually as a series of short sections. Easyimate makes videos up to 5 minutes on a paid plan.
What is the structure of a VSL script?
Seven parts: a hook that calls out the viewer, the problem, why it keeps happening, the solution, how it works, the offer, and one call to action. Proof such as real results or reviews goes wherever you have it.
Can I turn my VSL script into a video?
Yes. Paste the script into Easyimate and describe the look. It plans the scenes from your narration, shows you key frames, and animates the video with voiceover, music and captions. You can try it free with 1 video up to 2 minutes.
